Great start for Germany’s tennis stars

Great start for Germany’s tennis stars

Stuttgart,

Four German players were in action on Monday and three made it more or less easily through to the second round.

The only German “victim” on the first day of the main draw was Maximilian Marterer. No wonder as he was the underdog in his match against no. 5 seed Steve Johnson (USA). However, Marterer was able to surprisingly take the first set 6-3 but then lost the second in the tie-break. In the third set Johnson completely shook of the dust to take the set (6-4) and the match.

There were better news coming from Yannick Hanfmann, who won the duel of the qualifiers against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 7-5. After the match he bemoaned the short time to adapt from clay to grass court: “I still have problems with running, because you can’t make the same steps as on clay.” Conditions were made worse by a steady wind, which was especially apparent when throwing the ball up for the serve. Hanfmann had made headlines while reaching the quarterfinals at Munich after coming through the qualification. If he’s able to repeat this feat, there would probably Roger Federer be waiting in Stuttgart. “That would be a dream come true. I think I could end my career after that match”, he said jokingly.

Jan-Lennard Struff defeated qualifier Lukas Lacko from Slovakia 6-4, 7-6(3).

The final match of the day was played between Mischa Zverev and Malek Jaziri from Tunisia, with Zverev easily advancing to the next round 6-3, 6-1. Zverev felt good during his season premiere on grass court and knew all about the strengths of his opponent: “He has a good backhand slice, can charge to the net and also has a good forehand. So, I didn’t quite know what to expect from him. The last week in London helped a lot. I practiced with my brother and came to Stuttgart well prepared.”

Today’s results set up a German duel in the second round between Zverev and Hanfmann.

Still more good news for German tennis fans came from the doubles event: Tommy Haas and Florian Mayer overpowered Florin Mergea (ROU) and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi (PAK) in three hard-fought sets 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-7.
