Defending champion Pouille reaches semi finals

Stuttgart,

Frenchman Lucas Pouille (2) won a, over large parts high-class, match on the Center court against Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan after three hard-fought sets to advance to the semi finals.

In the first set, the French title holder had one break to take the set. In the second, both players had nine break balls combined, but neither Pouille nor Istomin were able to convert any of those chances. In the tie-break, Istomin kept the upper hand. The third set finally saw the greater skill of Pouille break through, with the Frenchman converting his second match point with an ace to win the mathc 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. “Even after the loss of the second set I stayed optimistic”, said Pouille, “I raised my aggressiveness.”

Milos Raonic kept the upper in a captivating service-duel of two former Wimbledon finalists, beating Tomas Berdych twice in the tie-break. During the whole match there were only two break chances, both in favor of Berdych during the only first set service-game of Raonic in which the Canadian struggled. In both cases Raonic was able to save the break points. Logically, both sets had to be decided in the tie-break where Raonic was clearly dominating. Berdych was able to make two points in the first and only one in the second tie-break.

The first semi final on Saturday thus will see defending champion Lucas Pouille and Milos Raonic face off against each other.
