The MercedesCup 2019 started with a pitch-black monday for the German players.
Tsonga storms past Mischa Zverev
The MercedesCup 2019 started off with a disappointment for the German fans, as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stormed past local hero Mischa Zverev in just 56 minutes, with the German only winning three games. In the first set, Zverev was able to save three break points, but a fourth was all it took for Tsonga to take the first set. In the second it was all Tsonga who ceded not a single game to Zverev. In the end it was 6-3, 6-0 for Tsonga.
Kohlschreiber out, too
The second German, Philipp Kohlschreiber also took an early exit from the tournament. He had tobow to Seriba’s Next Gen star Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets. Kohlschreiber got off to a good start, taking the first set 6-3. The tide turned in the second with the Serb having the better finish winning the set 7-5. In the third, Kohlschreiber was just too mistake prone and Kecamovic was able to win the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Lopez final qualifier
At the same time, the final qualification match between Feliciano Lopez from Spain and Kazakh Alexander Bublik was finished after it had to be delayed on Sunday due to rain. The Spaniard kept his composure, delivering a convincing 7-5, 6-4 win over the unorthodox playing Bublik. In the first round of the main draw, fans will thus be treated to a re-match of the 2017 final, as Lopez will face-off with Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who took the win in 2017.
