Great news for all tennis fans! After 2016 and 2017, Roger Federer will again play Stuttgart’s MercedesCup to kick off his grass-court season. The Greatest of All Time, as he is being called due to his sensational success, is the all-time record holder in Wimbledon since winning his eighth title last year. In doing so, the Swiss passed by tennis giants like Pete Sampras (USA) and William Renshaw (GBR), who managed to take the Wimbledon crown seven times, thus writing sport history. To start off this year, the “Maestro” won the Australian Open, capturing his 20th Grand Slam title – yet another milestone in a one-of-a-kind career.
Just like last season, Roger Federer has skipped the complete clay season focusing completely on the upcoming grass tournaments. “The atmosphere at TC Weissenhof is amazing. You immediately feel that this club is full of life. The fans get really going during the matches. On grass, my expectations are naturally high, so, I’m looking forward to once again playing in Stuttgart”, said the 97-times ATP tournament winner Federer.
“It’s a great honor and at the same time a great commendation that Roger Federer, one of the all-time-greats, will play in Stuttgart for a third time. His matches in the last two years assured for a choke-full Centre Court at Weissenhof and he appreciates the pleasant ambiance in Stuttgart. Roger Federer’s participation enhances this year’s MercedesCup status even more. To offer the stars perfect conditions to prepare for the Wimbledon highlight, we have completely rebuilt four grass courts for this year’s edition of the tournament”, explains tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
Federer, who last year was voted the world’s athlete of the year for the fifth time, will have to deal with some strong competition at this year’s MercedesCup (729,340 Euro total financial commitment): Milos Raonic, an avowed grass court specialist will play at the Weissenhof for the first time. His run to the Wimbledon final in 2016 should serve as proof of his prowess on this surface. Besides title holder Lucas Pouille (FRA), there are also Hyeon Chung (KOR), Nick Kyrgios (AUS), Denis Shapovalov (CAN) and Taylor Fritz (USA) – a lot of “young guns”, who will grace Stuttgart with their participation. Add last year’s finalist Feliciano Lopez (ESP), David Ferrer (ESP, winner 2006) and Gael Monfils (FRA) and you also have a trio that possesses a lot of experience – just like Federer. And, of course, German tennis stars Philipp Kohlschreiber, Peter Gojowczyk, Mischa Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff want to get into the act when it’s time to battle for the Stuttgart title.
