Great news for Stuttgart – Alexander Zverev accepts last minute wildcard to start his campaign on grass court at the MercedesCup
Only 24 hours before the 41st edition of the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s TC Weissenhof kicks off, Germany’s number 1, Alexander Zverev, commited to playing the grass court tournament (754,540 Euro total financial commitment). The current number 5 in the world got a wildcard to stage his comeback after playing in 2015 for the last time at the TC Weissenhof. At the same time, tournament director Edwin Weindorfer also gifted Zverev’s brother Mischa with a wild card for the main draw.
“We are excited that Alexander Zverev will make his comeback at this year’s MercedesCup. The participation of Germany’s number 1 takes our already packed tournament roster to yet another level. Alexander Zverev has shown some great improvement by winning the tournament in Geneva and reaching the quarter final at the French Open. We are confident that he will show his great form also at the start of the grass court season in Stuttgart. This is a real milestone for our tournament”, explained Weindorfer.
“I’m happy to again play the MercedesCup in Stuttgart. I’ve gained new confidence over the past weeks and hope play some successful tournaments on grass. I love to play in front of my home fans in Germany”, said Zverev. The winner of eleven ATP tournaments and reigning ATP world champion will be the number 1 seed ahead of the two Russians Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev and Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia. He will enjoy a “by” in the first round. Before taking to the court in the singles he will already participate in the doubles contest, together with his brother Mischa. Having reached the finals in Halle in 2016 and 2017 shows how well the 22-year old from Hamburg can play on grass. The German armada of ATP pros fighting for the title in Stuttgart is rounded out by Philipp Kohlschreiber, Jan-Lennard Struff and Peter Gojowczyk, making it five local heroes at this year’s MercedesCup.
