On noon Sunday, the MercedesCup final will be played between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marin Cilic.
Fans at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof can look forward to a grand generational duel for the tile of this year’s MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof. On the one side, you’ve got 20-year old Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN/21) on the other 32-year old Marin Cilic (CRO/47).
Auger-Aliassime already reached the MercedesCup final two years ago where he was defeated by rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini. For the Canadian only one of already seven finals on the tour – but to date he didn’t manage to win one of them. So, it’s also a battle against his “curse in finals”. The 20-year old said: “I’m a better, a more complete player now.” But he also knows that it won’t be easy: “Cilic has been one of the best players on the tour in the last years. He is a great champion.”
Certainly, Cilic won the US Open in 2014 and has also gathered 18 winner’s trophies on the ATP tour to date. While Auger-Aliassime had to go over two sets in his semifinal against US-American Sam Querrey, Cilic also benefitted from a withdrawal due to injury in the second set from his Austrian opponent Jurij Rodionov.
