It’s finals day at the MercedesCup

Stuttgart,

On Sunday, the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof reaches its climax: from 11 am we have the doubles finals on tap, then, not before 1 pm, the singles final will be played.

To kick things off, the Stuttgart crowd can hope on a win from a local duo: Philipp Petzschner/Tim Puetz will take on the Swedish/Polish duo of Robert Lindstedt/Marcin Matkowski.

Then the 97-times ATP tournament winner and – from Monday – new number 1 in the world, Roger Federer, will try to capture his first Stuttgart title. After a thrilling three-set win over Australian Nick Kyrgios in the semis, yet another great server waits in Canadian Milos Raonic (7). Federer, after reaching his goal by retaking the number 1, is calm: “Of course, it will not be easy. I will have to concentrate on my service and hope that I will get an opening when he serves.”

The head-to-head sees Federer with a 10-3 lead. The last duel between the two was in Wimbledon 2017, where Federer won in the quarter finals in three straight set. Just one year before, Raonic ousted Federer in the Wimbledon semis in five sets.

Raonic definitely shouldn’t be underestimated. Up to the finale, the Canadian was in a real hurry, never having to go the distance in Stuttgart and only having to save three break points.
