Stuttgart,

Tennis ladies to play in Berlin at Germany’s most prestigious women’s tournament from 2020 on. Under the patronage of Chancellor Angela Merkel the capital will host the Grass Court Championships Berlin.

There will be some radical changes to the three week grass court season of the WTA and ATP tour between the Grand Slam tournaments in Paris and Wimbledon! Berlin will make a comeback on the WTA tour with a Premiere Event. From 13-21 June 2020 the Grass Court Championships Berlin will be held at the LTTC Rot-Weiß and the auspices of Chancellor Angela Merkel. The event site can host up to 7,000 spectator in the Steffi-Graf-stadium and will receive three grass courts. Three more courts will be erected near the Olympiapark. The construction of the new grass courts will be made in close cooperation with the experts of the “All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club” from Wimbledon.

Berlin receives the WTA tournament license from Birmingham which, in return, will take over the “International” event from Mallorca. The resort island will still not be wanting for world class tennis as there will be a men’s tournament. The decision for Mallorca to host an ATP 250 event was made possible following an ATP bid application for a tournament to replace the grass-court event previously held in Antalya, Turkey. Both, the women’s event in Berlin and the men’s event in Mallorca will be organized by “e|motion sports”, which has already been organizing the ATP tour event MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof since 2007. Thus, the company is now responsible for three major international grass court events in Stuttgart, Berlin and Mallorca, while also organizing the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna.

“By organizing three tournaments in as many weeks we are facing a big challenge which we gladly accept. Berlin has already been an internationally highly regarded tournament location from 1979 to 2008 with the German Open. We are very happy and thankful to the WTA, Wimbledon and the agency Octagon to have accomplished the return of an exclusive women’s tennis highlight to the capital. Furthermore, it is an honor that the tournament will be held under the patronage of Chancellor Angela Merkel. I also want to thank Berlin’s senate as well as the members of the LTTC Rot-Weiß-Berlin and sports director Markus Zoecke, who have all shown great support for this project. Regarding the line-up, we assume that 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber will participate, as well as Julia Goerges and lots of international world class athletes”, says e|motion CEO Edwin Weindorfer, who also highlights the positive economic aspects of this major sports event: “Economists from the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) have calculated with the help of their macro-economic Berlin model that in the next five years consumption and investments surrounding the WTA tournament will have an increase on Berlin’s gross value of 25 million Euro.”

Philip Brook CBE, AELTC Chairman, commented: “The AELTC is pleased to be working with Octagon and e|motion sports on the new WTA Premier-level tournament in Berlin. A strong and successful grass court season is absolutely critical to the future of grass court tennis and thus the future success of The Championships. Having worked to expand the grass court season to create a meaningful gap between Roland Garros and Wimbledon, we are pleased to be making significant further investments into ensuring that quality grass court tournaments can be provided at all levels of the game with the best interests of the players and the broader tennis family in mind.”

“For the first time in years, this event will put the international tennis focus again on Berlin. I am happy that – together with the LTTC and the WTA – we achieved to bring back the tournament to Berlin. Women’s tennis perfectly fits into the sportive diversity of our city”, says sports secretary Aleksander Dzembritzki.

“Twelve years after the end of the German Open, the LTTC Rot-Weiß will once again be host for an international women’s tournament. Since 1906 tennis events have been held at this sport historic site. There were already 49 Davis Cup events held here! From 2020 we will once again see world class women’s tennis at the Hundekehlesee and TV will broadcast the matches all over the world”, explains LTTC Rot-Weiß sports director Markus Zoecke.

“The partners, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from Wimbledon and e|motion sports have already shown elsewhere that they are a perfectly functioning team. Amongst others in Germay at Stuttgart’s MercedesCup. Without the quick and decisive acting of mayor Michael Müller and the senatorial administration including senator Andreas Geisel and state secretary Aleksander Dzembritzki, this endeavor would have been impossible. The directorate under the leadership of the president of the LTTC Rot-Weiß, Werner Elkermann, has laid the groundwork by intensively planning and negotiating with all parties to make the realization of this tournament possible. The club members have voted with an overwhelming majority to convert the three tournament courts into grass courts”, Zoecke adds.
