Will Tommy Haas’ tennis fairy-tale at Stuttgart’s MercedesCup continue today? Mischa Zverev, the tournament’s no. 6 and fellow countryman, is his opponent in the quarter final. Philipp Kohlschreiber will face Lucas Pouille (FRA/4).
After his sensational win over the number 1 of the tournament, Roger Federer, Haas obviously now wants more. The victory was also the first time since Rome 2014 that Haas was able to string together consecutive wins on the ATP World Tour. And as all good things come in threes, a win today would also, finally, mean a semi final for Haas again. Zverev also wants to build on his performance in the first rounds, having doubled his win-number from last year’s grass court season already. 2016, the Moscow born German and no. 31 in the world was only able to win one match on grass. Zverev has no doubts about how hard it will be to celebrate his third win at this year’s MercedesCup: “I lost our last duel on grass against Tommy.”
The third German to see in action today is Philipp Kohlschreiber. The Augsburg born will have to face the tournament’s no. 4, Frenchman Lucas Pouille. Anything but an easy lot. Anyway, both have been “practicing” enough in Stuttgart, as Kohlschreiber and Pouille had to go the distance against their second round opponents Steve Johnson and Jan-Lennard Struff. Pouille, along the way, also provided for the shot of the week, if not the season: At 8-7 Struff in the third set tie-break, there was an amazing duel at the net with the better end for Pouille who would go on to also take the next points and the match.
