Today, the spotlight is on the international stars

After some very German heavy days, today is the day for the international competition to show off their skills.

On Thursday, the focus at the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s TC Weissenhof will be on topstars Tomas Berdych (CZE) and Grigor Dimitrov (BUL). As players in the top 4 of the tournament, both had received a bye for the first round. Especially Berdych, the tournament’s no. 3, will now face a tough hurdle when he first enters the Centre Court as there will be erratic Australian Bernard Tomic waiting. Tomic, the current no. 48 in the world, got to the second round by beating Frenchman Stephane Robert in three sets.

On paper, Bulgarian Dimitrov should face an easier task. Stuttgart’s no. 2 will make his first appearance at the Weissenhof against Jerzy Janowicz from Poland, who is currently only the no. 155 in the world and just got into the main draw by invoking his protected ranking after a long injury. In the first round, however, Janowicz ousted Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.

Spaniard Feliciano Lopez enters his bout with Jeremy Chardy from France as the favorite. The world’s no. 33 expelled the tournament’s no. 7, Gilles Simon, with surprising ease 6-3-, 6-3 in the first round. Chardy, on the other hand, had to fight his way past German Florian Mayer in three tough sets to reach the second round.

From a German point of view, there will only be one local hero in action today: Qualifier Peter Gojowczyk (ATP 146) enters his match with Frenchman Benoit Paire (ATP 49) as the
