Janowicz ousts Dimitrov

Stuttgart,

On Thursday yet another favorite to win the title at Stuttgart’s MercedesCup waved goodbye. No. 2 seeded Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria was ousted by Jerzy Janowicz (POL) in two straight sets. Janowicz, who can only be found at no. 155 after an injury and was able to enter the main draw thanks to his protected ranking (94) won 7-6(4), 6-3.

Neither player conceded a break point in the first set, with the match opening up slightly more in the second. At 3-3 Janowicz had to save three break points before immediately converting his one and only break point of the match to take a 5-3 lead. He then served out the match easily.

Benoit Paire (FRA) brutally stopped German Peter Gojowczyk’s winning streak in the final match of the day. The German had enjoyed a successful run through qualification up to the round of the last sixteen, but Paire was simply too strong for the 27-year old no. 146 in the world. Paire cruised past Gojowczyk in two straight sets 6-2, 6-4. He will meet Janowicz on Friday to battle it out who will advance to the semi final.
