Spaniard Feliciano Lopez was the winner of the first match on Thursday at the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof. He beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in three sets.
Lopez, who during the players’ party on Wednesday said grass court was his favorite surface, won the first set 6-3, despite having to have his back treated during an early change. Chardy turned the tide in the second, winning it also 6-3. Yet, the Spaniard prevailed in the third, taking the deciding set 6-2 and advancing to the second round.
The second match of the day was a pretty easy win for Tomas Berdych (CZE/3), who nevertheless had to go the whole distance in the first set. The Czech relinquished a 5-2 lead, only to win the set 7-4 in the tie-break. The current no. 14 in the world showed all of his class in the second, taking it 6-2 and thus advancing to the quarter final.
