Lucas Pouille wins title at MercedesCup – Murray/Soares take trophy in the doubles

Stuttgart,

Lucas Pouille is the winner of this year’s edition of the MercedesCup (€ 701,975 total financial commitment).

On Sunday, the no. 4 seeded Frenchman won the final on grass court at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof against 35-year old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in 2:05 hours 4:6, 7:6(5), 6:4. The reward for his third ATP title were the winner’s check of 112,460 Euro and a brand new car: a Mercedes E 400 4MATIC cabriolet. Lopez, who had the chance to secure his sixth title on the tour, received a check still worth 59,230 Euro.

After exiting the French Open already in the third round, Pouille had asked tournament director Edwin Weindorfer for a wildcard and received it. “I want to give thanks for that again. If I hadn’t gotten the wildcard I wouldn’t be standing here now”, said the 23-year old during the winner’s ceremony. He secured the win by hitting his 29th ace of the match. Before, Lopez had saved two match points, with one of those being a double fault from Pouille.

One of the keys to success for the current no. 16 in the world was his ability to stay calm during dangerous situations. Pouille had to concede a very early break in the first set, but was able to save six more break points during the match. The Frenchman won this first break point to take a 3-2 lead in the third set. “It was also very important that I was able to hold my service in the tie-break of the second set. That was a very important moment”, Pouille explained. He was on the verge of being ousted of the tournament already in his first match when he was able to acrobatically save a match point by Jan-Lennard Struff during a great battle at the net.

For Feliciano Lopez it was the first time that he reached the final of the MercedesCup, after being eliminated in the semis in 2003 and 2007, when the tournament was still played on sand. “Of course it’s tough to lose a final, but I have played good tennis this week. Yes, I know the tournament for quite some time now, but the change from clay to grass has made it even better”, said the Spaniard.

The doubles title was won by the British-Brasilian duo Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, who beat the Austrian-Croatian double Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-5 in the Match-Tie-Break. After winning the Grand Slam titles in Melbourne and New York last season, it was the fifth title overall and the second this season after Acapulco for Murray/Soares.

Tournament director Edwin Weindorfer summed up the tournament very pleased: “We are happy that we were able to welcome 61,000 fans during the nine days of the MercedesCup at the Weissenhof. Since we have started to organize the tournament in 2007, this means a new record number”, said Weindorfer.
