On Monday the main draw ceremony of the MercedesCup was held in the media center of the TC Weissenhof. Alongside tournament director Edwin Weindorfer and ATP supervisor Stephane Cretois, Dustin Brown was also present.
Brown had the honor of executing the draw and quickly got himself a match-up with Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia – anything but a lucky draw. The 29-year old is currently ranked no. 31 in the world, but bowed out early in Paris against Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz. “I know him pretty well, we had some practices together. It’s no easy draw, but all in all I’m quite happy.”
Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the tournament’s no. 1, enjoys a bye in the first round and will then face the winner of Feliciano Lopez (ESP) against Alexei Popyrin (AUS). The tournament’s no. 2, Hubert Hurkacz from Poland, also has a bye for the first round and will then meet the winner of Dominic Stricker (SUI) – qualifier. Stricker, only 18 years old, was also granted a wildcard and is one of the biggest hopes of Switzerland to one day follow in Roger Federer’s footsteps.
Big emotions will be guaranteed, when French Open hero Dominik Koepfer will face Austrian wildcard player Jurij Rodionov in the first round.
The main draw starts on Tuesday, 8th June 2021.
