Mischa Zverev only German in the semifinal

Stuttgart,

Mischa Zverev, the current no. 31 in the world and seeded no. 6 at the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof ended Tommy Haas’ tennis fairy tale in the quarter final in two straight sets. An early break in the first was enough for the 29-year old to take the set 6-4. In the second, Zverev saved three consecutive break points at 3-4, got the break himself in Haas’ very next service game and went on to serve the match out 6-4.

“All in all it was a good week for me”, was Haas’ summary after the match. “The match against Roger Federer certainly was a highlight.” Of course, Haas had to concede that his age (39) is taking its toll. “You can always feel better. But generally I feel I’m on the right way. It’s much better than, say three months ago. It’s hard work to stay fit and win matches. I want to prove it to myself. And I want to be the one to say when it’s over.” Haas will play in Halle next week and then hopes for a wildcard in Wimbledon.

Zverev will face Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the semis on Saturday. Lopez ousted no. 3 seeded Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic in three sets. At the press conference Zverev said: “At the start of the week I was expecting Roger Federer in the quarter final. I didn’t make a game against him the last time we met on grass court. Then Tommy goes out and beats him and I have to ask myself if it’ll be even tougher against him. On paper I was the favorite, but all I tried was to win my first service game and go on from there.”

Lucas Pouille crushed the hopes of local hero Philipp Kohlschreiber to take the title at his home tournament. The Frenchman won the first set 6-4. Kohlschreiber found his game in the second, quickly dispatching Pouille 6-2. The French no. 4 of the tournament got an early break in the third and never looked back, taking the set, and the match, 6-3.

Kohlschreiber was anything but down after the match: “I’m leaving with a better feelings as with which I came here. I had three matches, even won a close one. Today, I controlled a young, rising star for some stretches. Of course, I would have liked to stay in the tournament, but Lucas today was spunkier, he served well and earned this win”. Benoit Paire set up a French clash by winning his quarter final against Jerzy Janowicz. He beat the man from Poland 6-1, 7-6(4) and will meet fellow countryman Lucas Pouille in a battle for the final.
