Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic strengthen the MercedesCup field even more! Cooperation with premium partner LIQUI MOLY extended to 2022.
Since Germany’s no. 1 Alexander Zverev and Australia’s “enfant terrible” Nick Kyrgios have announced their participation, two more big names have committed to the MercedesCup, held from 6-14 June 2020 at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof. We are talking about French tennis entertainer Gael Monfils, the man of the moment on the ATP tour, and Canada’s super server Milos Raonic.
Gael Monfils had a sensational start to the new season. The 33-year old Frenchman won the tournaments in Montepllier and Rotterdam without dropping a set. In Rotterdam he even managed to defend his title from 2019. Monfils has a winning streak of nine matches and has already accumulated 13 wins this year, losing only twice. The fan favorite has now won ten titles in his career and has also reached at least one final for 16 years in a row (2005-2020). Only Roger Federer (20 seasons/2000-2019) has more consecutive years with at least one ATP tour final. Monfils shares the second place with Rafael Nadal (16/2004-2019), with Novak Djokovic coming in behind these two with 15 consecutive seasons with at least one appearance in a tournament final (2006-2020).
Monfils (ATP-9) is the second top ten player behind Alexander Zverev (ATP-7) to honor this year’s edition of the MercedesCup. Back in 2010, the Frenchman reached the final (then still being played on clay). In 2015, the first edition held on grass, Monfils reached the semi-final. “Stuttgart is a very special tournament with an extraordinary flair. I love to come back. Winning the MercedesCup would be pretty special for me”, says Monfils.
Milos Raonic is among the best servers on the ATP tour. The 29-year old reached the final of the Mercedescup in 2018, proving his mettle on this surface again by reaching the semis last year. Furthermore, Raonic reached the finals of the ATP 500 event at London’s Queen’s Club in 2016 and also the finals in Wimbledon.
This year the Canadian kicked off his year by reaching the quarter-final of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Especially his straight-set win over Greek’s world number 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round had fans amazed. “Due to his spectacular way of playing tennis, Gael Monfils is an enrichment for every tournament. Milos Raonic is among the title favorites in every grass court tournament. With Gael Monifls, Milos Raonic, Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios we offer the fans four distinct types of star players at this year’s MercedesCup”, explains tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
LIQUI MOLY EXTENDS PARTNERSHIP FOR THREE MORE YEARS
Besides the positive development in regards of the participating players, the organizers of the tournament highlight on Stuttgart’s Killesberg have also had success in the sponsor department. The cooperation with premium partner LIQUI MOLY, which has been going since 2012, has been extended for three more years until 2022. “The MercedesCup is a perfect opportunity for LIQUI MOLY to position our brand at a high-quality sports event. By changing the surface to grass in 2015 the tournament’s value has been extremely increased. Due to this positive development it was only logical to continue our cooperation”, stresses Peter Baumann, head of marketing of the worldwide operating oil and additives specialist LIQUI MOLY from Ulm.
“We are happy to continue our highly successful cooperation with LIQUI MOLY which was started in 2012. This commercially very successful company is not only a very important partner for the MercedesCup but also for lots of other sports. From this point of view we are very proud that our cooperation with LIQUI MOLY has such a long lasting endurance”, says tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
