Since Roger Federer has decided to not participate at this year’s French Open in Paris, phones at the MercedesCup office in Stuttgart are running hot. The “Tennis Maestro’s” first European appearance of the season – the Swiss has already triumphed at the Australian Open and the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, has ticket demand for the ATP grass tournament at the TC Weissenhof (10-18 June 2017) soaring to new heights.
“Forgoing all of the clay season just goes to show how much he wants to win the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon for the eighth time, thereby writing sport history. We are happy that Roger Federer decided to start his intensive preparation to fulfill his dream here at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart. Especially ticket demand from the neighboring countries has risen noticeably”, said tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
“Recently, I have worked really hard– on and off the court. Looking forward to many more years on the ATP Tour I thought it best to completely skip the clay court season. I’m preparing intensely for the grass and hard court tournaments”, 18-times Grand Slam-victor Roger Federer explained his absence from Roland Garros.
During a PR appointment at Lenzerheide (SUI) in the mid of April, the superstar made his ambitions to win the MercedesCup clear: “Of course, my expectations on grass are high. The starting field at the MercedesCup will be great. As I haven’t won that tournament yet it’s my goal to win the title this year.”
