Stuttgart,

The MercedesCup 2020 will not be held in June – organizers look into options of shifting date of the grass court tournament in 2020

Because of the cancellation of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon (June 29th to July 12th) due to the Corona virus pandemic and the extended suspension of all ATP and WTA grass court events, the MercedesCup in Stuttgart is also affected. These decisions have led to the fact that the tennis tournament usually held on the premises of the TC Weissenhof cannot be held from June 6th-14th, 2020 as planned. The organizers are now looking into options to stage the MercedesCup at a later date this year.

“Regrettably, the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic leaves us with no choice but to suspend the Tour further until 13 July; a decision we’ve made in close cooperation with our members and the other governing bodies of tennis,” said Andrea Gaudenzi, ATP Chairman. “Health and safety remains the top priority as we navigate the challenges ahead in these unprecedented times, and we will do everything we can for the Tour to resume at the earliest opportunity once it is safe to do so.”

“It is all about following the authority measures to confine the corona pandemic so that all patients can get the best possible medical care. Health is the most important thing – only in the case that the world has finally managed to limit the corona virus pandemic, we will be able to get back to a more normal life that we were used to. Naturally, this also applies for tennis on all its levels”, stresses MercedesCup tournament director Edwin Weindorfer, who is in constant contact with the ATP to ponder the possibility of a postponement of the tournament.

“In the coming days and weeks we will not only have intensive talks with the ATP but also with all our partners regarding a postponement of the MercedesCup. But it all comes down to the current situation having calmed down as far that it allows a regular official game activity on the ATP tour again. Holding a tournament must not pose any health risk for the players, their team, the tournament staff or the fans”, Weindorfer adds. The representatives from the TC Weissenhof have Weindorfer’s back: “The MercedesCup is the highlight of our tennis season, thus we will go along with all the necessary decisions to be able to maybe hold the tournament this season”, says TCW chairman Dr. Gert Brandner.
