Roger Federer takes MercedesCup title for the first time

Stuttgart,

Finally, he did it: The “GOAT”, the “Maestro”, Roger Federer crowned himself king of Stuttgart in his third go. In the finals he beat Milos Raonic from Canada (7) convincingly 6:4, 7:6(3), pocketing not only the prize money of 117,030 Euro, but also the winner car, a Mercedes CLS 450 4Matic Coupé.

Federer was especially pleased with the car, as he said during the winner’s interview on the Center Court: “I’m driving home this afternoon to Switzerland, so it comes in handy that I heard there was a car to win here.” This made for some good laughs in the capacity crowd.

The match against rocket server Milos Raonic only lasted 79 minutes. Of all things it was Raonic who had to concede the only lost service game of the match – after stomping through the tournament without conceding a single break and only having to save three breakpoints. But against Federer he had to accept the superior class already in his second service game, when a blocked backhand return winner gave Federer the only break he would need in the set. After that, there wasn’t a single break point and, logically, the second set had to be decided in the tie-break. The breaker was even till 3-3 and Raonic fell for one or two small mistakes. That was all the opening Federer needed, easily serving the tie-break out 7-3, taking his 98th tournament title. If Federer goes on to win the tournament in Halle next week, he would be in the historic position to win his 100th tour title in Wimbledon.
