The first round of qualification for the 39th edition of the MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof will boast no less than six Germans in the first round on Saturday.
Daniel Brands will take on no. 1 seed Lukas Lacko. Daniel Masur and Peter Gojowczyk offers the fans a German duel for a place in the second round. No. 3 seed Maximilian Marterer will take on Lukas Rosol from the Czech Republic, who reached the final in 2014, when the MercedesCup took place on clay for the last time. Stuttgart’s local hero Yannick Maden, who was issued a Wildcard, will take on no. 8 seed Vincent Millot from France. And, finally, Daniel Altmaier, who also got a Wildcard for the qualification, will face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.
Main draw with Philipp Kohlschreiber
The main draw for the ATP grass court tournament (€ 701,975 prize money) will also be set on Saturday at 1 am. Philipp Kohlschreiber will be present at Weissenhof’s “Bürger Wiese”. The Augsburg native has his spot in the 28 players main draw secured, just like Tommy Haas, Mischa Zverev, Florian Mayer and Jan-Lennard Struff. It will be interesting which opponents the German players will have to face in the first round and who might be Roger Federer’s opponent in the round the last sixteen. Federer, of course, has a bye in the first round. The first match of the 18-times Grand Slam champion is set for Wednesday, June 14.
On Sunday, June 11, the Suisse superstar will hold a public practice session together with Tommy Haas on Weissenhof’s Center Court. Directly afterwards, Michael Berrer’s farewell doubles will be played, including Philipp Kohlschreiber, Florian Mayer and Mischa Zverev.
