Canadian shooting star Felix Auger-Aliassime prevented a second German advancing to the semifinals by beating Dustin Brown 7-6(3), 6-7(2), 7-6(2).
There were no breaks in the first two sets, but when Brown finally broke through Auger-Aliassime’s service in the third it looked all but certain that he would go through to the semis. At 5-4 he even had a match point but put a volley into the out. Auger-Aliassime struck back, got the re-break and cruised to the set and match win in the tie-break.
In the semis he will meet fellow countryman Milos Raonic. The tournament’s no. 6 had no problems disposing of Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4 in just 73 minutes.
Struff cruises into semifinals
Jan-Lennard Struff has reached the semifinal of the MercedesCup for the first time. After 69 minutes the world’s no. 38 converted the first match point against 2017 winner Lucas Pouille (FRA) to celebrate a 6-4, 6-4 win. The 29-year old got his revenge for his 2017 second round loss to Pouille in three sets. After the match, Struff admitted that the match from two years ago was still in his head: “Yes, it was still bothering me. I’m just happy that I won in straight sets today.”
Saturday will see the seventh semifinal appearance of Struff on the ATP Tour where he will meet Italian Matteo Berrettini, who is a man on a mission in Stuttgart.
And that mission is winning his second trophy of the year. So far, everything has been running smoothly for the number 30 in the world. With three matches down, he has yet to save a single break ball. In the quarters he stormed passed American Denis Kudla in just 73 minutes 6-3, 6-3.
