The 42nd edition of the MercedesCup has to be rescheduled to 2021
In the wake of the cancellation of this year’s Wimbledon tournament (29 June – 12 July 2020) on 1st April 2020, the ATP has also suspended its tournament operations until at least 13th July 2020. Due to this decision of the tennis players association the MercedesCup in Stuttgart is also affected.
The organizers of the ATP grass court tournament on the premises of the TC Weissenhof have carefully considered all options and finally decided that the MercedesCup can’t be held at a later time this year. One of the many reasons was that due to the current developments of the global COVID-19 pandemic a prolongation of the current measures by the ATP cannot be ruled out. Looking at a possible alternate date and a crowded tournament calendar there was no other way but to reschedule the MercedesCup to next year. Thus, the 42nd edition of the renowned grass court tournament will be held from June 5-13, 2021!
“The cancellation of all tennis tournaments on the ATP tour until 13th July was the right decision, taking the current situation into account. At the same time it is a tough setback for us. We were on course with our preparations for the date in June and wanted to offer our fans and all partners of the event once again a world-class grass court tournament. Taking into account the development of the continuous Corona pandemic as well as all the related measures and restrictions it is obviously tough that the MercedesCup can’t be held as planned this year, but the safety and health of the players, staff and fans is of paramount importance”, says tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
“The MercedesCup has been a solid part of the ATP tour since 1979. Since 2007 we as e|motions sports together with Mercedes-Benz as title sponsor are organizing this tennis highlight at the Weissenhof. Naturally, we regret that the tournament can’t be held as planned even though we as organizers did everything we could. Now we have to look forward and muster all our forces to secure a successful return of the tennis stars to Stuttgart. I would not want to forget to wish our long-standing partners and fans all the best in this currently very challenging time. We are looking forward to seeing you again at the MercedesCup in June of next year”, Weindorfer adds.
We are in the process of working on customer friendly solutions for already purchased tickets, which aim on the one hand to keep the tickets valid for the MercedesCup 2021 and on the other hand to refund the purchased tickets. We ask for your understanding that we have to wait on the decisions of the responsible authorities, before we are able to take the necessary steps. As soon as appropriate laws are in effect we will publish our further approach in accordance with our ticketing partners on our website www.mercedescup.de.
